Maimunah Mohd Sharif was the 15th and first woman Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, serving from August 2024 until November 2025. She previously served as Under Secretary General and Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat) from 2018 to 2024. Ms. Sharif was the first woman appointed President of the Municipal Council of Seberang Perai in 2011. In 2017, she was appointed Mayor of the City Council of Penang Island, where, as Director of Planning, she led the development of the Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone, one of the world’s top three manufacturing hubs for microchips and electronics. As Executive Director of UN Habitat, working closely with Member States, Maimunah Mohd Sharif successfully convened three World Urban Forums and two UN Habitat Assemblies. During her tenure, the UN General Assembly endorsed International Zero Waste Day and World Cleanup Day in recognition of the global waste challenge. At COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, she convened the first ministerial meeting on climate change and urbanisation. This initiative was expanded at COP28 and COP29, where she continued to advocate for the recognition of local contributions to nationally determined contributions (NDCs). She is also leading Malaysia’s commitment towards achieving a carbon neutral capital city by 2040. In recognition of her contributions through UN‑Habitat in China, she was awarded the Chinese Government Friendship Award. She currently serves as Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) Property Advisor and Advisor on Sustainable Urbanisation to the Government of Malaysia, and sits on the International Advisory Council of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), providing strategic advice on urban development, sustainability, and long term institutional direction aligned with sustainable development. Maimunah Mohd Sharif also sits on the boards of various local government networks, including United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, and the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO). She serves as a jury member of the Lee Kuan Yew World Cities Award, The King’s Foundation Awards, the Shanghai Awards for Sustainable Urbanisation in Cities, and the WeGO Smart Cities Awards, and was also the Chief Panel Member of the BRICS Urban Future Awards.
